“Colonial” Education is a tool to Oppress & Control Afro-Americans -Jamaal Bowman

Congressman Jamaal Bowman lectures Students at the Forsyth Satellite Academy in Conjunction with CAMBA To Reject Their Oppressive Colonial Eduction

Jamaal Bowman used his position as an African American Male and Member of the US House of Representatives, to damage the future of the kids he portends to help. Rather, than encourage and inspire these students to embrace their free NYC Public Education to build a better future for themselves, Jamaal Bowman used the opportunity to shame kids into rejecting their education.

The Forsyth Satellite Academy has a total minority enrollment of 99%, and 90% of the students are economically disadvantaged. The reading proficiency of students is 45% and the graduation rate is 36%, and the academy ranks 976 of the 1,198 New York High Schools.

Instead of serving as a positive role model to lift these kids-up. Bowman proudly, and righteously, warned the students that their education was a tool of the “colonists” to “control them.” He went on to state that embracing and succeeding at school was to nurture the very colonial system that oppresses them.

Here is what Jamaal Bowman said:

“So our education system here is “colonial.” Like as an African American my history was taken away from me.  They put my ancestors here as slaves. We didn’t know our language, we didn’t know our religion, we didn’t know our culture, we didn’t know where we came from. I just learned a couple of years ago that my mother's lineage traces to Sierra Leone and my father’s lineage traces to Burkina Faso. I just learned that a couple of years ago.   Versus our colonizers who know their whole history and culture, and implanted that history and culture on top of us- to control us.  And so our education system right now if, you're not learning about your history and culture- it's colonial . it's helping you to nurture a colonial system that nurtures your own oppression.” -Jamaal Bowman
